Be Willing to Turn

One of the blessings of 2020 is that I am able to teach my classes from pretty much anywhere. This was a benefit during the summer when my schedule was extremely unpredictable and now, before the weather shifts, I am trying to teach outside as much as possible.

On Monday, I decided to teach my meditation class on the banks of the Connecticut river. I sat in the park near the ferry in Rocky Hill and enjoyed the gorgeous view. It is a short drive from my house, but, when there, it feels like you have gone a long way on vacation.

At this park, there is an historic ferry which carries people the short distance from one side of the river to the other. It goes back and forth all day. The trip is largely the same, the ferry pushed by a tug boat driven skillfully to account for current, etc.

Monday, as I was thinking about the ferry back and forth, I came to realize that so many times we are like that ferry. Moving back and forth, side to side, feeling sometimes stuck in a box or on a small constrained path. This limiting path may be caused by stories we have created in our mind or that we have picked up by stories which we have picked up from others. Maybe we are feeling constrained by perceived obligations or some other fear. The reasons we box up are countless.

For myself, I was wondering which part of my own life was like this. Back and forth, small path, sure of the destination. Then, I was wondering, how might it be to cast off those limitations. The river runs miles in both directions, flowing beautifully. How might it be to just let go of the preworn path and go off in the direction of flow? I am thinking that the benefits would be as bountiful as the sea.
