Put Yourself on the Schedule

Last week, I was walking with Angela, and we were reflecting on how we are both guilty of filling the calendar with doing things for other people. At the time, we were really talking about how important it is to make sure to set boundaries with other people and to make sure that there is time put into the calendar for the things that it takes to live in the world such as grocery shopping, cleaning up, etc.

However, over the week, personally, I have also noticed how important it is to take time every day for the extra things that keep me sane. This, frankly, is probably more important than scheduling the laundry. I will confess that the scheduling part hasn’t settled in yet, but I will say that every day I have just dropped everything from my endless to do list (having recently moved and having not sold our old house, you can imagine that the to do list is certainly daunting) and I have taken a walk in the woods followed by a good 20 minutes of meditation. For me, the trees and the meditation help to connect me to my sense of joy and to my understanding of why I am really here. When I emerge from my yoga/meditation space, I feel much more myself and able to take on the rest of the day with energy and clarity (as they say in the yoga nidra script).

Of course, I am not suggesting that you take a walk in the woods and meditate every day, but I am suggesting that you look into your heart and figure out what it is that makes YOU sane, and then put it on the calendar as non-negotiable. While it is counterintuitve , everything else will run more smoothly when you do.
