In the Soup

When I was younger, I was an active recreational pilot. Flying was a fun activity that I did with my brother and father, and I have many great memories of bopping around in the air. My favorite way to fly was in IFR conditions, which means instrument flight rules. In simple terms, this allows a pilot to fly in conditions where they can’t see far outside the plane. When we flew into a cloud or fog, we would say that we were “in the soup.” In this state, visual and even visceral cues were unreliable, and we would rely on our training and our instruments to get us safely to where we were going. There are few things more satisfying than flying in the soup, trusting yourself, and then finding the runway right out the front window, ready for you to land.

This week, I was talking to a new friend, and he asked what I was planning to do when the world returns to whatever its new normal will be. Without thinking, I simply replied “I’m in the soup.” When I said that, I was thinking about caterpillars who faithfully form their chrysalides and become a soupy like substance before they re-form and become their beautiful butterfly selves.

Either soupy image is a great lesson for me in this time, and I was delighted to notice their parallels when I was thinking about this concept this week. I feel like my life has been in the soup for some time, and circumstances have made the future even more difficult to imagine. Every day, I would simply get up, trust in my practices, follow the path that I had set out for myself, and then go to bed.

I don’t know exactly where my skills, training and destiny will take me next, but I have faith that ultimately, I will find that landing strip with my beautiful wings unfurled. I’m sure that you will too.
