Awaken to the Beauty of Each Day

Sometime early last week, I began to hear people talk about the weather forecast for the weekend. We would be sitting on a Zoom call, chatting before class, or walking in a beautiful clear spring day, and the topic of the weekend snow would inevitably come up. Pretty quickly. It was amazing how much energy people spent worrying about and complaining about the snow that was going to come. All this while beautiful birds were flying by, hummingbirds eating at the feeder, and the profuse daffodils resolutely displaying various shades of yellow for the umpteenth week in a row. What really happened? Here at my house, we had no snow when it was predicted, but experienced a surreal, warm sun snow shower in the middle of the day, later followed by a bizarrely beautiful snow squall which melted shortly after it fell. More of a delight than a trouble for anyone.

This is mirrored in all of our conversations these days. What will life be like next week, next month? None of us knows the answer to this, and, while it is fun to plan, common to complain, and easy to slip into some level of ennui or even despair, there is just so much good going on around us every day that it is as pervasive and miraculous as the never ending daffodil display of this spring. Consider all of the people donating to charity, volunteering at food banks, offering to give blood, delivering food to homebound people, and going out of their way to do their jobs virtually just to name a few of the good things that are happening. This is combined with nature putting on the most beautiful spring display in recent memory. Flowers, green, light sparkling on the water, birds returning.

I acknowledge that this is a hard invitation to follow, but mindfulness teaches us to enjoy the beauty of each moment. This is not a new teaching or a new suggestion, but it was snapped into focus by Sarah Spiegel during a a yoga class last week. I am happy to pass this on to you.
