Many lifetimes

Today, I was reflecting on how we live so many lifetimes in our own time alive. Some people might call these phases of life or generations, but I have really come to see them as lifetimes.

You know what I mean, if you sit back and reflect on your own life. You can remember how it was to be young and fully dependent, trusting the perceived wisdom of those older than you. Think about being in younger school, college. Then, we are young professionals, starting life as adults and making our independent way. We become dependent again when we have children and again our circles are intertwined with others as we enjoy the joys and trials of this. We live through the phases again as we watch our kids grow through their lifetimes, and we also shift and change as our parents change.

The issue is that it is all too easy to get stuck somewhere, wanting to feel the comfort or the love or security of an earlier phase of life. Who doesn’t have those days sometimes when you want to go back and curl in your mother’s lap or sit back and do something with your kids that you did back in the day? In our culture, we do a very poor job of marking rites of passage and therefore we often get stuck, wavering and dipping back into different lifetimes and not firmly embracing the beauty, gifts and opportunities of the phase of life we are in now.

How would it be to embrace where you are on the life’s journey, knowing we are always going into the unknown and resisting the desire to pull ourselves back. It is definitely the scary direction, but it is where the growth is.
