Anticipating the Flow

This year has been a year where all of us have experienced some kind of loss. While we all experience loss of one kind of another every year, this year the loss is concentrated. In my own case, several friends and acquaintances have died, my father in law died, and last week we learned that one of our favorite bookstores closed. For others, it might be a favorite restaurant, a regular trip that was cancelled, a graduation that was retooled.

Because we have had such a succession of recent losses in our sphere I really began to think of all of these losses as openings for the new. This may sound odd, particularly as we lose the light and the love of important people. What I mean, however, is that there is always something new that comes in when something leaves. I have had frequently in my mind the image of the water receding on the beach before the next waves comes in.

In the case of the closed restaurant or bookstore, what exciting new business will have the opportunity to open there? What unrealized dream might the business owner be now free to take? I have seen so much creativity in planning for graduations - our town’s high school’s graduation experience was arguably better than a regular year.

In the case of losing people, it is harder to think of the flow of abundance. However, I can honestly say that I continue to meet new and interesting people whom I love as life goes on, so even the loss of a person who is irreplaceable can bring new opportunities for love and experience.

Yes, it is easy to forget, but when I do, I take a breath and remember the flow. I can’t wait to see what fills into all the spaces that have been made.
