You're Doing a Great Job!

I just wanted to take a moment to let you know that you are doing a great job!

This may seem like a funny thing to be coming out of a relatively impersonal blog, but it came to me as I was walking yesterday that everyone could use some encouragement.

I was thinking about elementary school. Don’t ask me why, because I don’t remember. But one of the great things about elementary school is that you are reminded again and again about how awesome you are! Smiley stickers, stars, little certificates. How about Great Job! written in a colored pen AND a smiley?

Then, off we grow, and the world of stars and stickers and smileys become a thing of the past. However, the part of us that craves positive encouragement remains. It is just not in our culture, for whatever reason, to focus on this aspect of interacting with each other. So, I would like to say again, “Great job!”

If you are reading this, there is no doubt in my mind that you have experienced loss that you have had to navigate. You have made mistakes. You have had to make hard choices, and you likely wondered if they were the right ones. You have been kind and you have forgotten to be kind. You have noticed people and their needs and you have spaced out. Not to mention, how do you stay sane with so many messages coming at you from all directions? What is the truth in even the news these days? And yet, somehow you have made it brilliantly to this moment. You have learned from your mistakes, you have lived through any setbacks, and here you are, executing your day to the best of your ability!

So, take this smiley and good job and stick it onto your fridge or your computer and pull it out the next time you are feeling discouraged or “less than.” You have navigated the ups and the downs of your life perfectly, and have faith that you will continue to do so!
