Life is a Toybox
Recently, I have been spending a lot of time thinking about where to move forward in my life. Since one of my passions is helping people discern their next steps, I do the work with myself over and over. Given my age and my life experience, I have many things that I might choose to do in the future. Business? Yoga? Healing? Teaching? Writing? It is sometimes challenging to have such a broad range of experiences. Today, when we were walking, Angela began to talk about people who do a bit of one thing and a bit of another as having a portfolio career.
After meditation one morning, the terminology came to me that life really is more like a toybox. At any given time, it is helpful to pause and look at life and decide which experiences, which skills I want to pull out. Also, which to set aside for the moment. There may be something that I do that feels light and uplifting for me to offer right now. In addition, just because I am skilled at something doesn’t mean I have to do it. The joy and the light of it are what are most important, and some things become old and stale and need to be put aside.
This is not unique to me - we all have this, even if you are young. You all have a bucketful of skills and likes, maybe you just haven’t paused to think about it. I’d suggest that you review your vocation to figure out what is your path to joy. You might do this once a year, or, perhaps you are experiencing some kind of milestone - retirement, empty nest, leaving a job for one reason or another.
Consider the idea that we are meant to enjoy this life. Your skills and experiences are all there for you to draw upon. Moving forward, which are the toys you want to pull out?
